Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society
Phi Alpha Theta (ΦΑΘ), the international honor society for history students, was founded in 1921 at the University of Arkansas. The purpose of the society is to promote excellence in the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students and teachers together for intellectual and social exchanges, which assist historical research and publication by our members.
Any student with a 3.3 GPA in history, who has completed a minimum of twelve semester hours in history courses at CSU Channel Islands, and 3.0 overall GPA is eligible for membership in the society through our local chapter, Alpha Xi Kappa. Initiation into the chapter confers lifetime membership in the international society. The benefits of membership include eligibility for Phi Alpha Theta scholarships, paper prize awards, and book awards. Members also have the opportunity to participate in regional and national Phi Alpha Theta conferences, where they have the opportunity to present their research.
The Alpha Xi Kappa chapter organizes a yearly initiation celebration for new and current members in the Spring semester.
